Ellen Burton - 1877-1951

As far as I've been able to find out, Walter Verney (or Varney) died around 1910, leaving Ellen to raise her children alone. She took a job as a nanny for the Settle family. She was devoutly religious, and is buried at Steyning Churchyard (see photos below). The Settle family provided a fund to maintain her grave, though judging by the photograph below, this looks like it has been a bit neglected.

The family originally lived at 10 Northfield Cottages, Pinner Green, Pinner.

Alison thought that Ellen’s family originated in the Boston area of Lincolnshire. Ellen married Ernest so she could look after his mother - seems strange by modern standards, doesn’t it?
