george williams, age 3Andrew Dunn:
George Williamson was one of Meg's brothers. When George was a youth he was playing with a knife which went into his cheek near an eye. Later he lost the sight of that eye.

As an adult he became a brass moulder in Govan where he developed lung trouble. At that time lung trouble was thought to be an occupational disease of brass workers. To get fresh air he took work on merchant ships as a deck hand/stoker. He jumped ship in New York and lived there during prohibition and the depression. During the prohibition era, when he was working in a road gang, one of the gang managed to get some bootleg spirit but it didn't look very clean. To purify it they filtered it through a loaf of bread. The yield was poor and they each got very little at the share out. An Irish member of the gang said that he wanted more and ate the loaf. He died shortly after.

In 1939 he worked as an elevator operator. When the war started George decided to come home to help his country. He joined a ship bound for Britain and jumped ship when it arrived. Unfortunately the armed forces had no use for a one-eyed man in his late 50's - he was outraged.

George moved to his childhood district in Govan and worked as a caretaker/watchman in a shipyard. He visited Meg every Sunday.
